7 Day BHAKTImmersion
with Sean Johnson and The Wild Lotus Band
Bhakti Yoga, Kirtan-Training, and Soul Celebration
In The Heart Of New Orleans
Want to enhance your connection to Life through Bhakti yoga and kirtan? This 7 Day Intensive is for anyone who wants to steep in bhakti- the yoga of the heart; for yogis who are seeking to deepen their practice; yoga teachers who want to learn how to share more singing and bhakti in classes; and people who are interested in learning more about the art and practice of playing kirtan music. The week opens with a full-on public kirtan celebration with Sean and the Wild Lotus Band playing in their own backyard. The week continues with ecstatic interactive chanting, dancing, storytelling, rituals, mythology, bhaktiful asana practice with live music, journaling, and mystical poetry. Options include: chanting and basic harmonium lessons with Sean; rhythm and drumming workshops with Gwendolyn; guitar-for-kirtan and music workshops with Alvin; an exploration of the archetypes of gods and goddesses, guidance on how to bring more bhakti into your life, practice and teaching; garden party; live local music; and more surprises in the soulful and magical city of New Orleans. Includes a informative handbook with bhakti and kirtan resources. The final night of the BHAKTImmersion is timed to coincide with the first Mardi Gras parade of the season, Krewe du Vieux, an opportunity to celebrate our week together amidst the music and joy of carnival.
My fear of singing in front of people has been a challenge; the Wild Lotuses were the perfect teachers to inspire me (and everyone else) to love singing rather than continually fear being imperfect. They did this through practices utilizing our voices, introducing us to the basics of the harmonium and then inspiring us all to play embodied drum rhythms. They gave me the courage to sing out loud, to lead and be led. Being an Indo-Canadian, I would have never imagined learning kirtan music from Westerners, and I have to say: Sean Johnson, Gwendolyn and Alvin live, breathe, play music and sing with their whole hearts in a mesmerizing manner that sends chills all over my body and soul. The experience of learning from them far exceeded my expectations. We learned the bhakti path of singing and playing music to share out in the world and for our own devotional practice. I haven't stopped singing since! by Hemalayaa, published in LA Yoga Magazine's Guide To Learning Kirtan
Sessions will be held at Sean's yoga studio Wild Lotus Yoga. Some discounted housing opportunities in the community will be available. More details on this to come.
